New Minister and Renamed Ministry Overseeing the Condominium Act
Following the June 2nd 2022 provincial election, the Ontario government announced on June 24th 2022 that the ministry responsible for overseeing the Condominium Act and the Condominium Management Services Act, formerly known as the Ministry of Government and Consumer Services, is now known as the Ministry of Public and Business Service Delivery (the “MPBSD”). The provincial government also announced that the new Minister leading the MPBSD is the Honourable Kaleed Rasheed, the MPP for Mississauga East-Cooksville.
The Minister of Finance remains the Honourable Peter Bethlenfalvy (Pickering-Uxbridge). The Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing remains the Honourable Steve Clark (Leeds-Grenville-Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes). The Attorney General remains the Honourable Doug Downey (Barrie-Springwater-Oro-Medonte).
Although the Condominium Authority of Ontario (the “CAO”) and the Condominium Management Regulatory Authority of Ontario (the “CMRAO”) are delegated administrative authorities with their own separate Boards of Directors, the CAO and the CMRAO are ultimately responsible to report to the MPBSD. The MPBSD is also responsible for the Regulations under the Condominium Act, and as such, will likely be looking into expanding the authority of the CAO-operated Condominium Authority Tribunal (the “CAT”) even further. What that expansion will look like, remains to be seen.
